Roots and Wind

I still have a very slow connection, so pictures are not going to get posted again.

Last night we were just getting ready to go to bed when the weather radio started screeching at us. We turned on the tv to local stations (we get 2 here!) and found there were all kinds of severe storms heading this way. As we watched and listened while checking the maps, we determined that most likely the worst of the storms would pass south of us.

However, the local tornado sirens started going off, so we got dressed, got the dogs and our valuable papers and headed out to find a safer place to be. We still didn't think we were in immediate danger, but many other people in the rv park were leaving, so we thought it was the best thing to do. This area did have straight-line wind warnings for winds up to 90 mph, but not tornadoes. We found a brick building and stayed in the car right next to it, out of the path of the wind, until the warnings expired. There were some strong gusts, and the power went off in parts of town, but we were ok. We came back to the motor home and stayed up until the storms were way east of us. I finally got to sleep around 2 am.

This morning, I went to the local library and did some more looking for my roots. I've not found what I was looking for, and actually have more questions than answers at this point. I can't find any record of my great grandfather's first marriage. The information I have indicates my grandfather was born to his first wife. I also can't locate my grandfather's birth record. He was born in 1875. The staff at the library said there aren't many birth records that far back.

Since I was really tired after last night, I came home, had lunch and took a nap. This afternoon, we took a drive to the town my great grandfather lived in about 25 miles from here. I'd been told that he's buried in the cemetary near there, so I wanted to see if I could find his grave. We not only found the cemetary and his grave, but also 4 others in the same group. I discovered that he evidently had another son from his second marriage that we never knew about. We knew of two sons, but I'd never heard of this third one who's buried next to him. More questions! Was this other guy really his son, or a different relative? If he was a son, why haven't we ever known about him? Did he have any children?

So, I have more research to do!

Tomorrow we're going to stock up on groceries for the rally - I need the ingredients to make my mother-in-law's famous carrot cake! Then, we are invited to dinner at a my distant cousin's house to compare genealogy research notes and get acquainted.

More fun, and I'll hope to come away with more answers than questions!
