A Maine Drive

We had no particular agenda today, so we decided to take a drive and see where we ended up.  Luckily, after it was all said and done, we ended up back where we started, which is a very good thing!

We started off going south and east to get on US Highway 1 which runs along the coast.  Mostly, this is what you can see:

There is actually a very small beach here where many people were sunning and enjoying the water:

A little further down the coast we came to the town of Camden – looks like a few other people had the same idea to get out today:

We wiggled our way through the traffic and kept going until we reached Rockland.  There we turned around and started back up the highway, with the idea that we would stop at a winery we’d seen, and maybe another one off the coast.

At the north end of Rockland, I saw a tiny blue sign saying Lighthouse so of course I yelled, “turn here!” and Jim did.  We found a little park and a long walk out to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.  In the picture below, if you look carefully, you can see the long breakwater with people walking, and at the end is the light:

We had the dogs with us and weren’t prepared to make that walk today, so we’ll save that one, maybe get back to it before we leave.

We found the Cellardoor Winery and stopped in for a little taste:

While we were there we got directions to a couple of other wineries, so off we went.

After the next winery Savage Oaks in Union, we decided it was time for lunch.  The hostess at the winery suggested the Badger House Café and Pub there in Union, she thought it would be open, and it was.  We had a great lunch, although neither one of us had seafood today!

There was one more winery, Sweetgrass Farms, that Jim wanted to stop at - because they also have a distillery!  He finally got to do a little tasting.  He generally does not do wine tasting with me, works out better for him to drive!  But he did have a few sips of a gin that is infused with a “hint” of blueberry.

That was our last stop, so we programmed DeeDee to bring us back to the Pumpkin Patch.  I was just a little concerned because looking at a map, I could see that it was going to be a series of back roads to get back without going all the way back out to the coast, but we figured what the heck, we still have our Droid maps and Onstar, so we shouldn’t get totally lost.

DeeDee took us on the back roads, for sure, but she really knew her way around because we had a very nice drive, with hardly any traffic, and we were home in just over an hour!
