Enjoying Slow Days

Yesterday we took the day off from playing tourist. I played with my blog changes, polished a few things, including part of the outside of the motor home, and generally hung out. Jim made a run to the grocery for a few things to go with our barbeque beef that we had from the leftover roast. He also rearranged the items in the trunk of the car. While he was doing that, he discovered that our spare was flat. He took that into Custer and got it fixed. When he returned it to it's place in the trunk of the car, he situated it so he can easily check the air in it. As much running around on the dirt back roads as we've been doing lately, it would not have been a good thing if we'd had a flat!

Today started out to be another slow, hanging-around day. We worked a little on polishing the motor home, including getting the front windshield cleaned. I put away the bird feeders, since we've had no birds come to the feeders here. We visited with some of our neighbors, a couple who've recently sold their house in Oklahoma and become fulltimers.

Around noon, I asked Jim if he wanted to take a drive to Deadwood. He said sure, so off we went. It's about an hour's drive from here, and it is a beautiful trip. We were hungry by the time we got there, so we had lunch in the first place we came to. Of course, it's also a casino, so we played slots for a little while. I won $15 and Jim lost $10.

After that we just walked around and looked at the town. It reminded us both of a cross between Cripple Creek and Central City. I liked some of the architecture:

We had to get a picture of this bust of Wild Bill Hickok. He is the reason Jim doesn't like to sit in a restaurant with his back to the door. As the story goes, Wild Bill went into the #10 Saloon one evening to play poker. He could not find a seat in the corner where he liked to sit to protect himself from attacks from behind, so he took a seat with his back to one door and facing another, and was shot in the back by Jack McCall. He was supposedly holding a hand of aces and eights, now known as "Dead Man's Hand" in the poker world.

It was pretty crowded around town, and we didn't stick around to search out a lot of the historical nuggets; things like John Wayne's truck and Kevin Costner's memorabilia. If we're ever back in this area when it's not high tourist season, those would be things we might look for.

We headed back towards Custer, and found that it had rained while we were gone.

The weather has been cool today, very nice! While we were out this afternoon, there was quite a change in our campground. Several rigs had pulled out earlier today, and those spots plus more filled up. It will be fun to get to know the new neighbors!
